“Not everyone walks on clogs …”, an internationalisation project at the Public Dalton School De Plantage.

Preparations for primary school pupils and teachers from Gozo (Malta), Estland, Spain and Austria who are coming to the Dalton School after the autumn break in Houten are in full swing.

The Erasmusplus project is about prejudices, identifing and recognizing them. For example, the children from the partner schools will join their “host” buddy for a week in the group and they will make a presentation together about the Houten Dalton School or about the Netherlands. An assignment that fits in with the school’s educational concept. After school, the “Guest pupils” go to their host families and some will also stay for some days.

In advance, the children from the partner schools were allowed to fill in a questionnaire at home about their expectations about the host school and their visit to the Netherlands. Some foreign teachers have already indicated that these children already have a traditional image of our country with “mills and cheese.” After their visit, the children give a presentation about their visit at their own school and they receive another questionnaire about the experiences they have had”, after which the lists are compared and discussed.

The teachers of the partner school will visit their students at school, but also attend lessons in classes. They can experience a subproject where parents from De Plantage with a foreign background will talk about their expectations about the Netherlands. One of the parents said: “I knew in advance that not everyone in the Netherlands would be clogged and that the seawater would not flow in immediately, but ordinary things like congratulating everyone who comes on a birthday party and that one cookie with the coffee were remarkable. My whole family and I were very impressed with the space and the abundance of greenery in Houten. We came from southern England and we certainly did not expect this peace”.

These parents may also give guest lessons in the groups at the Dalton School.

The children of De Plantage also travel abroad. A huge boost for their English speaking skills and independence.

It is known that everyone at the school is happy with the large grant that the school received from Nuffic, the National Agency, to implement this two-year Erasmus plus project. They would like to share their experiences with other schools and look forward to the visitors who come after the autumn holidays.
