In Holland we celebrate a festival called Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas). Sinterklaas is a friend of the children and they believe that Sinterklaas lives in Spain and comes by boat to Holland.

At night the children leave their shoe near the fireplace or door and they put a carrot inside for the horse.

Sinterklaas rides his white horse over the rooftops, leaving gifts and treats in children’s shoes.

Sinterklaas has assistants who help him. All his helpers are called Piet (Pedro) and their faces are a little black with soot because they often pass through the chimney.

For several months in the supermarket there are spice cookies, marzipan and chocolate letters.

The festival is celebrated on December 5. Dutch children receive gifts. Parents give those gifts. Children believe Sinterklaas does.

At school we play a lot about Sinterklaas and we sing Sinterklaas songs during this period. Children like to dress up as Sinterklaas or Piet.
